Chichen Itza is located southeast of the capital of Yucatan, Merida,
(approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes away by car) and southwest of Cancun,
Quintana Roo (approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes by car) along Toll Highway 180D.
Chichen Itza is located one mile outside of the village of Piste.
We have attached a weather tracker for Chichen Itza from
Weather Underground here and also on the
Hacienda Chichen Resort room rates page. You can find current
conditions, 5-Day forecast, astronomical times and more.
The two international airports nearest to Chichen Itza are Cancun International
Airport (airport code: CUN) and Merida International Airport (airport code:
MID).
We currently do not offer transfer services from any airport or hotel.
There are a couple of transportation options: renting a car, taking public transportation,
arrange to hire a taxi driver from Piste through us to go
pick you up at the airport for a fee.
Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is very safe and easy; feel free to contact
us for more information.
Public transportation is very reliable and is available from both Cancun and Merida;
Cancun's airport offers a shuttle to the bus station from which you can catch a
bus to the village of Piste (just one mile outside of Chichen Itza). Here are
some useful links to help you:
One of Mexico's bus lines has it's own website in English now,
UNO.
We do not suggest that you spend your day at port trying to get to Chichen
Itza, as there is not enough time to really enjoy the site once you do finally
get there. We are by no means saying it is not possible, just not
satisfactory.
From Cozumel:
You would have to take the ferry across to Playa del Carmen on the
mainland, approximately 40 minutes, and then go via Tulum to Coba to Valladolid
to Piste, approximately 3 hours each way. Your other option would be to go
north to Cancun, approximately 45 minutes, and take the toll highway to Piste,
approximately 2 hours each way. Either way you go, you will arrive during
the hottest part of the day and won't have much time to see the site before you
need to head back to Cozumel. If you are really interested in visiting a
Mayan site, we really suggest that you go south from Playa del Carmen to Tulum,
or even Coba.
From Progresso:
You will need to travel south to Merida and then head on the toll highway
to Piste. While this is definitely a shorter venture, because you don't
need to take a ferry to the mainland, it has similar pitfalls. We suggest you check out
El Corchito, an ecological preserve just minutes from Progresso, and a great
Mayan site just south of Progresso called
Dzibilchaltun.
